The use of magic mushrooms, also known as psilocybin, can lead to life-changing experiences. But is it addictive? Despite being classified as a Schedule I drug in the US, recent research shows that psilocybin has a low potential for abuse and may even be used to treat different addictions. Classic psychedelics like psilocybin do not directly affect the brain’s dopamine system, which is necessary for a drug to lead to dependence. Moreover, large-scale surveys have shown no evidence of psilocybin addiction. While tolerance can develop, it is not necessarily a bad thing and can be avoided by taking breaks between sessions. In fact, psilocybin’s ability to help people face trauma and engender mystical experiences may make it a therapeutic option for treating substance use disorders such as alcohol addiction.
