Have you ever heard of someone who smokes weed and thought, “they just don’t look like the type?” I have, and it is always a good reminder that people from every age, stage, health situation, and culture can be pro-cannabis and smoke weed.
When it comes to cannabis, there is no ‘type.’ Unless you buy into the propaganda and stigmas associated with ‘The Devil’s Lettuce” and “Reefer Madness.” Or think that everyone who uses cannabis defaults to a lifestyle like Carl Spackler (Caddyshack), Jeff Spicoli (Fast Times at Ridgemont High), or Slater (Dazed and Confused).
Hollywood needs to start writing scripts about high-functioning cannabis users. You know, people who are ambitious, successful, and living their best life with legal weed. And patient stories too. The patient that now has a good quality of life after transitioning from opioids to cannabis for chronic pain management. Or a child with epilepsy symptoms that are now well managed, thanks to low-THC tinctures administered throughout the day.
That would be nice to see, wouldn’t it? More representative of the broad spectrum of people who use cannabis medicinally for symptom management. You would also be surprised to learn how many globally recognized business leaders, founders, and CEOs use cannabis. Curious? Check out this great article on Herb.co.
There are thousands of lists of celebrities that smoke pot. But we went looking for faces, you know, that you would never identify with cannabis culture. Surprise! These six (6) cool celebs smoke weed and love it.
1. Lady Gaga
Well, if you saw many of her artistic videos for her 2009 release “Fame,” you might think that a bit of herb was used to tap into her muse. She was writing songs for other celebrities like Britney Spears since 2000.
Check out her interview on 60 Minutes with Anderson Cooper.
“I smoke a lot of pot when I write music. I’m not gonna sugarcoat it for 60 Minutes that I’m like some, like, sober human being. Because I’m not.”
What many people do not know about Lady Gaga is that she lives with chronic pain. In her 2017 Netflix documentary, she talks about fibromyalgia and how it ravages her body. Gaga explained that she has to cope with frequent pain, fatigue, and sometimes shifting moods.
2. George Clooney
Celebrity playboy and globe trotter? Sure. Talented actor and voted one of the best-looking men on the planet? Absolutely. But whenever you see George Clooney, does he appear to be the kind of person that reclines by his pool with a bong or pre-roll? Actually, he is. And that could explain his perpetual “smiling eyes”. But he is very low-key about it.
When Clooney was shooting “Ocean’s Twelve,” there were scenes in Amsterdam. Home of the best and most famous cannabis cafes, which he frequented often. And he returns to Amsterdam several times per year. His best friend Brad Pitt outed him as far as keeping his cannabis use on the down-low. The actor said he frequently smokes with friends, including George Clooney.
3. Pete Davidson
With tenure on Saturday Night Life as a comedian, Pete Davidson has that goofy personality and slapstick humor that everyone loves. So, maybe it isn’t that surprising that he admits to using cannabis regularly. But it’s not all recreational.
When Howard Stern interviewed Pete Davidson in 2018, he talked about his health conditions. The comedian and actor has borderline personality disorder and Crohn’s disease. Crohn’s is a painful chronic disease that causes inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract.
Davidson admitted to Stern:
“There was a point where I couldn’t get out of bed. I was 100 pounds. I also just love smoking weed. I’ve been smoking weed daily for over eight years”.
4. Bill Maher
The star of “Real Time with Bill Maher” also got real about his love of cannabis. But the comedian contends that he’s really a ‘lightweight’ when it comes to weed. Maher stated that he smokes in moderation about three times per week. And commented that he thinks people believe he smokes weed constantly, but he doesn’t.
In a 2016 interview with the Chicago Tribune, Maher said:
“I am hardly the only person in this world who finds pot to be a creative aid. But if I’m staring at the blank computer screen sober, I’m thinking, ‘Uh, I don’t want to start this, it’s an assignment! Then, as soon as I’m high, which takes about three seconds, it’s “Oh, this is fun! This isn’t an assignment. It’s a GAME.”

5. Charlize Theron
She is a model, a film producer, an actor, and a celebrity spokesperson. What else does Charlize Theron enjoy doing? She likes to smoke weed. And she isn’t shy to admit it or talk about it; her love of weed stems back to youth when she used to carve pipes out of apples.
In an interview with E!, she spoke about her habitual “wake and bake”. She has said that as she got older, she is smoking less weed. It had worked to help her manage her insomnia and used it recreationally.
“I really appreciated marijuana way more than alcohol or anything else. My chemistry was really good with it when I was younger, and then, it just changed one day. In my early thirties, I just became boring on it, and I would just stand in front of my fridge, so that’s no good.”
Charlize Theron played a cannabis advocate in “Gringo”. Check out what she said about the flick and her Mom buying her weed when she needed it.
6. Anthony Bourdain
Honorable mention to the late Anthony Bourdain. Does anyone else miss him terribly? He may have been one of the most influential socio-cultural and food journalists on the planet. While he was working for CNN for six years, on “Parts Unknown,” he finally “came out of the cannabis closet” and revealed his love for weed.
When you think about it, Bourdain using cannabis maybe isn’t that surprising. And apparently, he was a fan of high-potency Indica strains. The journalist and writer used cannabis at home (not while filming…well, except a couple of times) when he needed to ‘shut down his brain’. How relatable is that?
In an interview with ad-free journalist-owned media outlet Popula, Bourdain explained why he liked to smoke weed. And commented on the contemporary potency being much higher than it used to be:
“I can smoke weed at home when I don’t need my brain anymore. But like, as far as socially interacting with people, or being [in] any situation where I might be called upon to answer the phone or make a decision? I’m not gonna do it! Now the stuff is devastating; you can’t leave bed.”
